Gilks stars as Malvern kickstart their campaign

RICHARD Gilks was the top performer as Malvern United Angling Club started their season with a packed day of action.

Drawn on island peg one, Gilks took full advantage of the good conditions at Mathon. Fishing the pole with corn hookbait, Gilks fished midway to the island and also in the margins to land several carp for a winning weight of 27-15-0.

Dave Harris on Peg 19 finished second, netting carp, the best going 9-10-0, which gave him 24-1-0. Chris Loveridge completed the frame by taking 13-7-0 of waggler-caught carp from the margins using corn and paste on unfancied peg 13.

Prizes and praise was handed out at the club's AGM at the Newtown Club, Malvern.

Chairman Phil Harding said it had been a difficult year for Malvern with the summer floods decimating the river fishing season. He thanked members of the committee for all their hard work in repairing the banks and platforms washed away by the floods.

In club secretary Mick Perks' report, he told the meeting that despite the limited fishing on rivers due to the flooding, some good catches were taken on the club's pool at Mathon with several 40lb+ weights in contests there.
