Young Stars shine at festival of football
IT was a day of goals galore and silverware scooped at a festival of football in front of 1,000 fans at Malvern Town's Langland Stadium.
Highlights of last Sunday's Mercian Festival Junior Football League's finals included Leigh and Bransford Badgers Rangers under-nine's side winning the George Goode Shield from Oldbury Park Tigers.
Cradley Sports Club under-10s scooped the Talbot Page-Jones Memorial Shield, beating Welland Junior Lions 2-1.
Despite a downpour during the afternoon, the spectators witnessed some excellent and very competitive football and the players were boys and girls playing from under nine up to under 14 age group matches.
George Silverman, Mercian League chairman, said: "More than 2,000 young people in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and bordering counties play regular competitive football through our league and we seem to grow year on year.
"I'd like to congratulate all the players who took part on Sunday, whether they won or lost, they were a credit to their teams and their clubs.
"We're really grateful to Malvern Town for letting us use their ground for our finals."
The Mercian Festival League's 11-a-side soccer finals day will be held at the Langland Stadium this Sunday. for the under-12's to under-16's boys teams and the under-13s girls team, with the first match kicking off at 10am. Tickets are priced £2 for adults and £1 for under-16s and senior citizens.
