Greenwood slots brace in Callow End victory
HDNL SPORTS 3, CALLOW END 5
CALLOW End's last fixture was postponed at Colwall so Callow End travelled to Diglis Basin pitches for this Division One fixture and earned a hard fought victory by the same scoreline as when the teams played at Callow End back in November.
Callow End took the lead on five minutes when a superb crossfield pass by Steve Maitland was rifled home by the in-form Mark Watkins. Callow were now playing on the counter-attack and missed a host of easy chances.
HDNL levelled on 35 minutes when Adam Morse failed to clear from a corner.
This gave HDNL a life and Dave Gray in Callow End's goal was forced into a couple of superb reflex saves.
Callow End went 2-1 up right on the stroke of half-time when Mark Watkins added his second.
Alex Jelleyman was making lots of tackles and earned himself the man-of-the-match vote.
The second-half saw Callow End settle down and pass the ball more fluently and they went 5-1 ahead with a brace from the prolific John Greenwood, who took his tally to 17 for the season, and a Sam Black strike.
HDNL pulled two back in the closing stages as Callow End sat back but they had done enough to earn the valuable three points in a division that is very close as only five points separate the top eight teams.
Callow End have a double Christmas header against in-form Malvern Radar, who are enjoying a good season and are up to second in the table.
Christmas fixtures are Sunday, December 23 away at Malvern Radar and Sunday, December 30 at home to Malvern Radar.
Player manager Hayden Jordan is still looking to strengthen the squad and players interested in joining the club should call Callow End FC on 07810 000474.
