JUNE.

BARNARDS Green’s Jamaican all-rounder Andre Russell continued his sparkling start to the Worcestershire League Division One season with 98 and 4-44 against Malvern in his side’s 122-run victory.

JANE Poynder, head coach at Manor Park Tennis Club, called time on her role as master of ceremonies at Wimbledon after 15 years.

FORMER Upton Rowing Club member Zac Purchase enjoyed a winning reunion with 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medal-winning partner Mark Hunter. They came first in the lightweight men’s double scull in Munich, the second World Cup event of the season.

ANTHONY White was the men’s solo winner at this year’s Mountain Mayhem at Eastnor Deer Park. The event attracted a record 17,000 spectators and saw 2,650 riders taking part.

JULY.

DAVE Robins stepped down after 15 years as Malvern’s director of rugby, and was replaced by head coach Andy Longley in a coaching shake-up. Robins became president and Peter Woods replaced Martin Pocock as chairman.

MANAGER Chris Palmer and chairman Richard Bond both quit Malvern Town. Palmer walked amid suggestions Archdales manager Martin Stephens had been lined up to replace him. Bond was unhappy with the decision and left. The club denied an approach had been made towards Stephens, who would be appointed later in the month.

A RECORD 500 racers took part in the fourth-annual Upton Triathlon. Rhys Davey picked up his fourth successive sprint distance win.

AUGUST.

A SUMMER of turmoil kicked off at Ledbury Town as manager Ben Symons resigned, citing a lack of ambition of the new board. He also took all but two of the players with him.

This move led the club to resign from the West Midlands (Regional) League and, instead, play in the Herefordshire League Premier Division.

PRINCESS Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips came ninth in a British eventing meeting at Homme House, Much Marcle, near Ledbury.

FORMER Wolverhampton Wanderers trainee Chris Cornes joined Malvern Town, as his new side lost 5-0 and 3-0 in successive Baker Joiner Midland Alliance games.

Town keeper Lewis Skyers missed out on a medal as his England side finished fourth at the IBSA Blind World Championship. Skyers, the only sighted player in his team, was part of the team that lost 5-1 to Brazil in the semi-finals.

SEPTEMBER.

DOWNHILL mountain biking star Tracy Moseley made it 13th time lucky after being crowned world champion.

The rider from Storridge, near Malvern, claimed the gold medal at the UCI Championship in Monte Sainte Anne, Canada, with a massive victory margin by seven seconds. She had finished runner-up on two previous occasions.

AN unbeaten 98 from West Indies ‘A’ star Andre Russell guided Barnards Green to the Worcestershire League Division One title with a seven-wicket victory over Stourbridge. Green finished the term on 349 points, 40 clear of second-placed Worcester Nomads.

MALVERN’S relegation from Worcestershire League Division One was confirmed with a 67-run derby defeat to rivals Colwall. Meanwhile, Eastnor clinched the Birmingham and District League Division Three title.

MALVERN RFC suffered a major injury blow when back rower Owen Jones slipped a disc in his back in his side’s 12-9 defeat to Old Northamptonians in National Three Midlands.

OCTOBER.

FORMER West Malvern pole vaulter Bryony Raine was well off her best at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, as she finished 13th in the final.

The former Malvern Hills Gymnastics Club member cleared early efforts at 3.65 and 3.80 metres, but failed to negotiate a 3.95m height, 20 centimetres down on her personal best.

MALVERN racing driver Arty Cameron celebrated after clinching the Monoposto (single-seater) Championship in the last race.

MALVERN recorded their first win in five games in National Three Midlands with a 36-31, six-try triumph over Newport (Salop). They ended 2010 in ninth place in the table on 30 points.

NOVEMBER.

AMY Stanton was crowned the World Indoor Bowls Council Ladies Under 25s singles champion. The Malvern Hills bowler beat Hanna Clarke from Wales 8-3 in the first set and 10-2 in the second at Gedling Indoor Bowls Club in Nottingham.

LIAM Killeen led the West Midlands team to success in the latest round of the Inter-Area Cyclo-Cross Championships. The Malvern rider was the individual winner in the senior men’s event.

ZAC Purchase added a world crown to his Olympic gold medal at the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand.

Purchase and Mark Hunter won the men’s lightweight double sculls category in a time of seven minutes 13.47 seconds.

MALVERN College celebrated the re-opening of its historic rackets courts after a major re-fit with a star-studded string of challenge matches.

DECEMBER.

THE year ended how it had began with the cold snap wiping out many of the month’s sporting fixtures.

MALVERN-based Callie Halliday was selected for the Great Britain freestyle kayak squad for the next 12 months after being placed third in the junior women selection process.

TRACY Moseley capped off her fine year by being crowned sportswoman of the year at the first-ever Malvern Hills District Council sports awards. The downhill mountain bike champion also revealed she will defend her title in 2011.

TERRY Jenkins made it past qualifier Joe Cullen and Steve Brown respectively in the opening two rounds of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championships.
