EIGHT teams of four from The Worcestershire visited Birmingham's Sandwell Park for the traditional captain’s away day.

In blustery but dry and eventually sunny conditions, the players took on fast greens and punishing rough with a nine-hole morning stableford involving blind pairings.

Sue Birch and John Williams won with a combined score of 33 points from Chris Jolley and Peter Basten on 32 and Paul Meakin and Allison Tuck on 31.

Then an 18-hole team alliance in challenging conditions saw three birdies and an eagle two on the long par-four third hole for relative club newcomer and regular competitor Wickes Potgeiler.

His team of Will Jones, Miceal Hanna and Jackie Marks scored 91 points to win from Colin Jones, Gerry Rooney, Jim Wilde and Colin Lowe on 85.

Third was on countback to Tom Wood, Roger Brierley, Tim Sinden and Allan Davies with 79.

It was the first time the club's ladies had joined the men on the day and proved a success.

Derry Hanratty (15 handicap) recorded seven pars and birdies at four and nine to return 39 points in round one of the senior tankards and qualified for the champion of champions contest.

Alan Martin (24) scored on every hole including six nett birdies but came up just short with 37.

In their inaugural friendly at The Staffordshire, The Worcestershire seniors were soundly beaten.

Captain Andy Peet and Nigel Teale won two-up with 11 pars but Dave Anderson and Barry Taylor lost 3&2, Ron Gordon and Allan Davies 7&6, Ted Smith and Gerry Bird two-down and Ron Barker and Terry Cox 6&5.

The Worcestershire rallied through Phil Bayliss and John Davison 3&2 and a half for Steve Lloyd and David Lloyd but Sam Macleod and James Noon lost 2&1.

Two players finished clear in the June medal with nett 69.

Tom Howells recorded five birdies but was beaten on countback by Gary Lynes who had three of his own.

Dave Jones finished third in Division One with 73.

In Division Two, Dave Turner beat Patrick McIlroy on countback into second with both on 74 and Terry Lloyd won with 73.

John Monk won Division Three from Steve Hill on countback with both on 73 and Andrew Reeves was third with 75.

The men’s B team lost at Burghill Valley 5 ½-½ with a half from Will Jones and Steve Homes.

Jill Brierly and Geraldine Williams won the LGU Coronation Foursomes with 38 points, five clear of Cath Francis and Mary Horrobin.

The ladies had success in the Redgrove Trophy after defeat away from home in 2017.

Twelve singles tee it up with the best eight scores added together to determine a winner.

The mixed team won 6-4 at Kidderminster with victories for Jim and Di Wilde, Clive and Debbie Minett, Chris and Vivienne Price, Andy Turner and Jan Kirkland and Ron and Liz Gordon.
