THE Worcestershire welcomed over 20 celebrities from the world of sport and television to the inaugural Peter Morgan Memorial Trophy.

The four-ball team alliance was close with the first three teams separated by countback.

First were Golden Castle Caravans supported by Grand National-winning jockey Carl Llewellyn with 80 stableford points.

Second were PMGC with former Scotland footballer and television pundit Andy Gray and third Blue Southern with Welsh footballer Steve Jenkins.

A separate individual competition among the celebrities was close too with The Worcestershire’s home professional recording a respectable 32.

Llewellyn won with 34 on countback from former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Kenny Hibbitt.

Paul Jewell scored 31, Sir Gareth Edwards 30 and Graeme Sharp 30.

All profits from the day will support the Alzheimer’s Society.

The Worcestershire beat Welsh club Ashburnham's B team 6½-½ after a 6-1 away defeat last year.

There were wins for Wickes Potgieter and Steve Holmes 8&6, Peter Basten and Bill Massey, Mark Roberts and Chris Hardy and Keith Hitchcock and Peter Jolley all 3&2, Will Jones and Ian Brazier 2&1 and John Williams and Andy Price one-up.

Michael Hanna and team captain Jerry Hibbert halved.

Club captain Basten took a strong team to Newport for the annual friendly which the hosts won 4-2.

Geoff Fox and Tim Sinden and Tom Wood and Martin Gummery won for The Worcestershire.

In the mixed greensome open, home pair Jim and Di Wilde stole the show with 42 stableford points.

John and Jan Clifford from Stratford were second with 37 while third on countback were Steve Sweet from Cirencester and Sefton Hooten from Rodway Hill ahead of local Dennis Doano and Trudy Humphreys from Droitwich.

The best visitor prize went to Mark and Stephanie Searl from Ombersley, also on 36.

The Worcestershire seniors lost 4-3 at Droitwich.

There were wins for Jon Davison and Nigel Teale one-up, Roger Blackwell and Tony Cox 3&2 and Ron Barker and Barry Caswell 3&2.

But Andy Peet and Tim Keates lost 3&2, Dave Jones and Maurice Moore one-down, Terry Cox and Robin Marling one-down and James Noon with Keith Hitchcock 5&4.

Barker recorded eight pars and a birdie in the vets midweek stableford to reduce his handicap to 16.

His 42-point total saw him finish two clear of Andrew Whiteley and three ahead of Charles Carmichael.

In EW Evans Centenary Cup round two, Lynn Morgan was top with 40 points.

The ladies' team started well at home in the handicap league, winning 5-0 against Kington and 4-1 against Cleobury Mortimer.

In the PING better-ball, Davina Taylor and Fiona Lucas recorded 41 points and must wait to see if their score is good enough to make the finals at Gainsborough in September.
