MALVERN teenager Alex Cupper won his fourth age group title in five years at the West Midlands Championships.

The 13-year-old, who fences foil and attends Somerset’s Millfield School on a sports scholarship, braved the weather forecast to return to the county for the event at Royal Grammar School Worcester.

Cupper will again represent his region in May’s British Championships after not losing a fight.

He progressed easily to the quarter-finals where he twisted and injured his sword arm.

In considerable pain, Cupper changed his tactics for the remaining fights, choosing to bide his time and wait for his opponent to make a mistake before striking.

He won his semi-final 15-1 and the final 15-6.

The victory followed a fifth-placed finish while still a year young in his age group at the Public Schools Fencing Championships at Crystal Palace, London, among 93 other competitors.

Cupper also collected bronze in the West Midlands Senior Championships in Stratford.

Taking on much older and larger opponents, he showed control and composure to take a deserved medal.

Fencing has opened other doors to Cupper who has finished filming fight scenes in London for a Hollywood fantasy adventure movie that is set for release in February 2019.

Sport runs through the veins of the family.

Cupper’s sister Sofia, 16, plays for Clifton Robinsons Hockey Club in Bristol.

They won their regional championship in Exeter and will be one of eight under 16s teams to progress to the national finals at Highfields Centre, Nottingham, on April 7 and 8.

Sofia will join her brother at Millfield School in September having been awarded a 16+ hockey scholarship.
