MALVERN Active hosted the West Midlands regional pentathlon, tetrathlon, triathlon and laser run event.

Competitors travelled from as far as Ireland and France and included Great Britain pentathletes.

The competition was well run, creating a friendly atmosphere with on-hand advice from experts.

Bernie Moss, the former Olympic and national pentathlon coach, ex-European ironman champion Kylie Mansfield and Rachael Handley, the Pentathlon GB English talent programme manager, were there.

The pentathlon’s riding phase was at Gracelands Centre, Droitwich, with horses provided by Court Equestrian, Callow End.

Pentathlon Hereford members enjoyed success in the under 15s girls’ section.

Becky Wreyford from St Mary’s High School, Lugwardine, won pentathlon gold with over 30 seconds to spare in the combined event of laser shooting and running.

She won the riding phase, going clear and closest to the optimum time.

Wreyford won the fencing overall with 19 wins and four defeats, including beating ex-world champion pentathlete Lydia Rosling.

This took Wreyford into the combined event one minute 17 seconds ahead of Ireland’s Bo Connery-Butler.

With sharp shooting and consistent running, she was easily first past the post for gold.

In the under 17s girls, Lucy Austin from Hereford Cathedral School, a Pentathlon GB English talent programme athlete, took silver in the pentathlon with strong performances throughout.

In the under 13s boys’ triathlon, Thomas Roxburgh and Jamie Owen, both from North Hereford Pony Club, made their debuts, finishing third and fourth respectively.
