ROUND one of The Worcestershire men’s winter better-ball saw Nick Day (handicap 8) and Rob Schooling (15) edge out Andrew Longley (4) and Graham Chatterton (13).

Both pairs recorded 44 stableford points and they qualified for the later knockout stages.

Nigel Allam (9) and Edward Gaynor-Smith (20) came home third on 43.

Kay Bromley, Lisa Stocker, Janet Long and Brenda Lowe won the nine-hole ladies’ alliance with 59 points ahead of new ladies’ captain Sue Boardman, Cathy Harris, Cath Francis and Jill Brierly with 54.

June Jones, Brenda Jones, Penny Stevenson and Yvonne Cawley were third on 52.

Despite terrible weather, all but one group completed the course when The Worcestershire’s seniors played their annual international match.

The match comprises three teams representing The Anglos, The Celts and the breakaway republic of Hanley Swan.

With 10 players per side, the winning team was determined by discounting the two lowest stableford scores in each team.

Captained by Les Facer, the winners with 260 points were The Anglos.

They were closely followed by Hanley Swan, captained by Mike Travis, with 254.

In third, captained by Ivor Dalgleish, were The Celts with 242.

Nearest the pin on the par-three 15th hole was James Noon.
