LINDA Scott, Pippa Riddle, Trish Scorer and Jo Hammett were the only winners for Upton Rowing Club at the Llandaff Regatta.

The quartet, who were among eight Upton crews at the event, were not given any handicap but convincing beat a younger crew from Gloucester in the W.MasD.4x final.

Scott and Hammett nearly repeated the feat in W.MasE.2x, but lost by two feet to a team from Llandaff. There was also agony for Chris Horne and Andrew Scott who got to the final of MasE.2x before going down to Stourport.

Liz Elston, Maggie Jameson, Sally Miles and Debbie Thompson had no masters opposition in the three events they entered - W 4+, W 2- and W2x but won all their races except the finals.

In total, Miles and Thompson did six races while Elston and Jameson completed four against younger opposition.

Dee Haynes won her first heat in the W1x but lost to a Llandaff sculler in the semi-final, while Andrew Scott failed to get beyond the first round in his 1x events.

On Sunday, the club’s juniors got the chance to meet Olympic gold medallists Sir Matthew Pinsent and Helen Glover and took part in a series of races.

Archie Tyrrell convincingly won his first heat in the J14.1x against Cardiff and Vale Schools Rowing Academy but lost to a Llandaff sculler by just one foot.

WJ15.4x+ of Daisy Haynes, Annie Darwent, Chloe Taylor, Karenza Goddard and Lucy Tyrell coxing, J14.1x of Josh Abel, J15.2x of Archie and Daisy, WJ15.2x of Annie and Daisy, WJ15.2x of Chloe and Karenza and J13.2x of Josh and Archie all put in strong performances but lost in their first rounds. Dee Haynes also raced in her single but suffered defeat in the opening round.

At the Henley Masters, Upton’s Julian Scrivener won his first round of Mas E.1x over a Marlow sculler by three lengths.

In the semi-final, he faced Gwilliam of Stourport and they had a thrilling race with the lead changing hands more than once, but in the end Gwilliam held on to win by a canvas. Stuart Edney, Adam Checkley, Richard Gill and Jon Eaton made their debut appearance in Mas C.4x but had the misfortune to be drawn against the British Masters gold medallists from Exeter and lost by two lengths.
