THERE was a rare feat in Bransford’s seniors championship when Peter Anthony’s albatross on the par-five 18th hole snatched victory from Trevor Atkinson.

His opponent had been leading fairly comfortably following the first round but then let in Anthony to win by three shots.

Atkinson (15 handicap) carded 82 for the lowest gross of the two rounds only to see his six-shot advantage steadily eroded due to a follow-up 94 to finish on 176 to the winner’s 173.

Anthony (11 handicap) had five pars and the albatross while Atkinson scored four pars and a birdie but suffered a nightmare nine on the par-four 16th and a double bogey on the 18th.

For the albatross the tee shot finished on the corner of the turn to the green for a shot of around 200 yards to the pin which was subsequently hit perfectly to run into the hole.

The Memorial Trophy is held with the championship and played to handicap.

Consistent John Phillips maintained his form to win by three shots from seniors competitions secretary Bob McGrath.

Phillips (21) finished with nett rounds of 72 and 71 while McGrath (19) was on 76 and 70 for a return of 176.

The seniors’ July stableford was marked by a hole-in-one from Ivor Lloyd on the par-three third.

Division One was won by Gerry Rebbeck on 41 points followed by Godwin 38 and Keith Leadbetter 37.

Corbett claimed first place in Division Two with the day’s best tally of 44 ahead of Phillips on 42 and Bill Bowen on 37.

Dick Bettsworth led the way home in Division Three with 39 on countback from Bradley and Brian Corfield was third with 38.

Graham Wallace reclaimed Bransford’s club championship title over 36 holes.

Wallace and last year’s winner Ollie Walker were the main protagonists.

Walker opened with an under-par round of 69 to move five ahead of Wallace.

Three shots further back was Ian Bowman (77) while Harry Chadwick and Mark Tipton stayed below 80.

The second round had the three tournament leaders out together.

Walker ran into trouble early on when he put his initial tee shot out of bounds and managed a second-round 78 to finish on 147.

But Wallace hit sparkling form for a six-under-par round of 66 to finish with 140.

The only other players to card sub-80 rounds were Bowman (79), Chadwick (71), Chris Eyers (72) and Andy Lammas (79).

Chadwick finished the two-day event with the best nett score overall.
