THERE were three gold medals for Herefordshire and Worcestershire athletes in the Mason Trophy.

The schools' event involving 10 counties was for juniors from years eight and nine and intermediates from years 10 and 11.

Athletes were picked after shining at the county championships and tackled humid conditions at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.

Newcomer Orla Walker (Bromsgrove School) won the intermediate girls' 1,500-metre steeplechase in five minutes 37.50 seconds.

Chris McLeod (Woodrush High, Wythall) finished first in the intermediate boys' 3,000m in 8.57.95 to qualify again for the English Schools Athletics Association Championships.

Emma Sherwood (Hagley High) won gold in the intermediate girls' high jump with 1.66m for an English schools entry standard.

Kaisan Tulloch (John Masefield High, Ledbury) bagged silver in the intermediate boys' triple jump with 13.20m and was also fifth in the long jump.

Josh Pearson (St Augustine’s, Redditch) was second in the intermediate boys' 400m in 50.61 and Matt Burke (Bromsgrove Prep School) threw 31.58m for silver in the junior boys' hammer.

Bronzes went to Sam Jones (North Bromsgrove High) in the junior boys' 200m after running 23.81 as well as doing the 100m and relay.

Lily Saxon (Alvechurch Middle) was third in the junior girls' 1,500m in 4.41.11.

Matt Griffin (Arrowvale RSA Academy, Redditch) clinched bronze in the junior boys' 80m hurdles in 12.47.

The junior girls took home a team bronze for the 4x100m relay in an English schools entry standard time of 51.30.

Hannah Sahota (Bromsgrove School), Nikita Gottardt-Mills (Ridgeway Academy, Astwood Bank), Sarah-Jane Ollis (The Chase, Malvern) and Lottie Atkinson (Royal Grammar School, Worcester) were in the team.

Eight English schools entry standards were set.

Ellie England (Heathfield School, Kidderminster) jumped beyond the mark in the intermediate girls' long jump for fifth in 5.33m.

The English Schools Track and Field Championships is in early July.
