YOUNGSTERS did battle in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Schools Track and Field Championships at Worcester’s Nunnery Wood.

There was success for various Worcester pupils, including record-breaking high jumper Joel Khan, Deanna and Brooke Clarke and Rachel Baylis.

Malvern teenagers to impress included Sarah-Jane Ollis, Danielle Hopkins and Hannah Tapley.

The athletes faced blustery conditions after being selected following school and district competitions.

They were chasing places in the Mason Trophy inter-counties competition and at the English Schools Athletics Association Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

In the junior girls’ events Nikita Gotthardt-Mills (Ridgeway Academy, Astwood Bank) finished first in both the 100 metres and 200m, fighting off Ollis (The Chase, Malvern) in both.

There was just 0.1 seconds between them in the 100m and both were awarded the same time of 27.8 seconds in the 200m.

Lily Saxon (Alvechurch Middle) convincingly won the 1,500m.

It was a gold and silver medal for junior boy Sam Roberts (Bromsgrove School) when winning the long jump and placing second in the 80m hurdles.

Sam Jones (North Bromsgrove) took two titles with gold in both the junior boys’ 100m and 200m.

In the intermediate girls’ events Hopkins (The Chase, Malvern) placed first in the high jump with a new championship record of 1.72m and also won the long jump.

Olivia Corcoran (Bromsgrove School) was first in the 80m hurdles and second in the triple jump.

Kaisan Tulloch (John Masefield, Ledbury) won both the long jump and triple jump.

Stewart Greenhalgh (South Bromsgrove) won two silvers in the long jump and 400m, just missing out to gold medallist Josh Pearson (St Augustine’s High, Redditch) in the latter.

Chris Telling (King Charles, Kidderminster) won silvers in both discus and hammer.

For the senior girls Liv Worth (South Bromsgrove) won gold in both the 400m and 800m. Candy Lockett (Bromsgrove School) took first place in the hammer with a new record of 44.94m and also claimed silver medals in the shot and discus.

Back on the track Brooke Clarke (Worcester Sixth Form College) won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m.

Tapley (Malvern St James) set a new record in the high jump clearing 1.72m while Baylis (The Chantry, Martley) beat the old shot put record.

The senior boys’ contest saw Gareth Richardson (RSA Academy Arrow Vale, Redditch) win both the 800m and 3,000m races.

Archie Freer (Bromsgrove School) placed first in both the hammer and shot while James Milburn (Hereford Sixth Form College) won the discus and came second in the high jump.

Harry Liversidge (Bromsgrove School) won the triple jump and came second in both the 100m hurdles and 200m.

Having set a new record last year as an intermediate Khan (Tudor Grange Academy, Worcester) cleared the high jump at 2.11m to beat the former senior boys’ record by a massive 11cm.

For Nunnery Wood there were also top three positions for year 10 pupils Andrew Jay (second, high jump), Katie Harris (second, 300m) and James Dale (third, 1,500m) and for year 11’s Sam Horsburgh (second, 100m).
