URSULA Pearson defied the elements to win The Worcestershire Golf Club’s Members’ Cup.

The nine-handicapper showed admirable consistency in wet and windy conditions, going out in 39 and back in 42. She carded eight pars and one birdie to take the title for the second time.

Close on her heels was ladies’ vice-captain, Sue Boardman, who returned with the same nett score but lost out on the back nine.

Third-placed Cathy Harris was one back on 73. Lisa Digings took Division Two with 74 points ahead of Pauline Savage on 76 and Ruth Scott on 77.

At the same event, the Hollins Putting Cup was won by Chris Urry with 28 putts ahead of Pearson, June Jones and Diane Meakin, all on 30.

In deteriorating conditions, only two players completed the nine-hole stableford, with Pauline Taylor finishing ahead of Ann Moody. Meanwhile, club captain John Williams led a men’s side away to Newport GC in Gwent, but the home side won by 3 ½ matches to 2 ½. Winners for The Worcestershire were Geoff Fox and Andy Dunster, and Steve Homes and Peter Basten. Mike Day and Mike Bolton secured the half while the captain and his partner Jim Wilde lost on the last green.

The other losing pairs were Garry Eames and Len Coleman and Dave Flanagan and Mike Bothma. Home advantage proved too strong for the ladies’ DICL inter-club league squad when they visited Leominster GC. Liz Evans won her match, while Pat Rose, Sue Boardman, Jill Piner and Mary Horrobin lost their games.

In the Mixed Open, visiting players Alan and Gail Walton came all the way from Durham City GC to take the winners’ slot.

With a turnout of 40 pairs, which included players from 24 different clubs, the event enjoyed excellent playing conditions.

The top three places all returned scores of 39 stableford points. Home player Cath Francis and Simon Jones from Verulam GC in St Albans missed out on the back nine, as did third-placed Sarah Pool from Bury St Edmunds GC, playing with Phil Birch. The Worcestershire’s Liz Pool and Peter Hill came home fourth on 38 and the Visitors’ Prize was won by Beverley and Mark Oliver from Burford GC.
