LEDBURY Swimming Club’s rising stars Seb Roffey, Max Rice, Molly Schofield and Eve Watson held their own at the ASA West Midlands Championships in Coventry.

Schofield, 13, qualified for five events and notably clinched silver in the 50-metre butterfly with the second fastest time in the West Midlands.

Watson reached the final in 50-metre backstroke having got the qualifying mark for seven events. The 14-year-old finished seventh overall in her age group.

Seb Roffey ,15, and Max Rice,13, both tackled the 50-metre sprint events swimming above their usual standard.

Head coach Tom Stokes said: “The regional championships are the culmination of months, if not years of work by our swimmers and our coaches.

“It is fantastic that a relatively small club such as Ledbury has four swimmers who not only qualified but also more than held their own amongst national swimmers.

“I am immensely proud of them as they have worked so hard. Swimming is an incredibly competitive sport which challenges our athletes both mentally and physically every day.

“These young swimmers have very bright futures indeed.”

The event saw about 200 young swimmers compete over two weekends. The qualifying times are demanding and require swimmers to swim some of the fastest times in the country.

Ledbury chairman Steve Watson added: “Many of our swimmers train every day of the week and show levels of commitment to be admired. I am humbled by the resilience and effort these young people are displaying.”
