DAVE Huggins continued his excellent season by winning the two-day Upton Severn Festival with a two-point total.

With the river low and clear, the expected bream weights did not materialise but Huggins landed an 11lb barbel after losing five on a waggler set-up and then feeder.

He was second on the first day from peg 39 with 13lb 8oz 0dr for a section win with local veteran Mick Harris getting 25-8 with four feeder-taken bream from the fancied pub steps for victory.

Third was Andy Jeffs from the adjacent peg with one bream and a few skimmers going 8-4.

The following day on the landing stage above the Ham, Huggins took 3-14 of bleak to narrowly win the section.

Match victor was Martin Hunt with 8-12 of roach from the cattle drink peg 42 on the waggler.

Also using the waggler for roach on peg 20 was runner-up Alf Hand with 8-4 and Paul Downes was third with 7-3 from peg five on Hanley road.

With Huggins winning overall, Hand was runner-up with three points followed by Hunt and Colin Harvey on four.

Worcester’s Tim Biddle qualified for next year's Bank Holiday Wychavon Festival at his first attempt.

He won the Evesham Individual League first round on the River Avon with a 16lb total.

Drawn on peg 17 on the town, Biddle used a hemp and caster feeder to tempt a 9lb barbel along with another smaller sample and a tench.

Runner-up Adrian Hosey had a brace of bream from peg one going 11-6 ahead of Mark Sutton with 9-2 and local rod Steve Pallett with 8-12.

Bob Patrick’s love of Tirley Court continued when he again won the Whitehall club fixture there with 111-14 of carp from the margins of peg 21 on luncheon meat bait.

Second was club star Dave Warren who, despite losing fish, weighed in a paste-caught 89-8 from peg 25 to beat Richard Oliver’s peg two catch of 82-6.

Section prizes went to Len Merrill, John Shelton, Keith Holt and Rob Page.

Droitwich Spa ace Chris Ballard won at Evesham’s Jubilee pool with an all-carp weight of 60-4 from peg 14 on dead red maggots and corn.

Second was Ken Smith with 49-2 to beat third-placed Dave Lowe’s 25-0.

Section winners were Reg Bastable and Mick Salcumbe.

The next Spa contest is on Sunday on the Severn at Upton.

Halfway House AC held their annual rod-only contest on Church Farm pool where Steve Pitt caught 93-14 of carp close in on meat and corn from peg 25.

His father Ron Pitt was second on peg 23 with 45-8 ahead of Keith Deaner’s 24-12 and Graham Goodyear's 19-8.

The club's next contest is on October 16.
