TALENTED Worcestershire teenagers are competing at the School Games in Loughborough and Sheffield until Sunday.

King's School Worcester pupil Cerys Preston, 15, and Malvern College's Alex Worrallo, 17, play hockey for Wales and England respectively.

Royal Grammar School Worcester's Abigail Watkins, 14, and Danielle Lawson, 18, compete for Wales and England respectively in fencing.

Nunnery Wood High School's judo prospect Sian Bobrowska, 15, turns out for England.

The competitors stay in an Olympic-style athlete village with opening and closing ceremonies organised.

Hartlebury's Lawson, ranked second in the Great Britain under 20s category, said: “I am so excited to have been selected to represent England for the second year following in the footsteps of many school games alumni who have won medals in Rio.

"It was so exciting to watch the GB fencers competing at the Olympics. Their performance was thrilling and GB was so close to its first fencing medal since 1964.

"I hope it has inspired a new generation of fencers as it has inspired me to further pursue my career to the next level.”

Watkins, of Worcester, trains at Malvern Hills Sword Fencing and is ranked 17th in the GB under 17s.

She said: “I am very excited about the games as it is just like a mini-Olympics where the athletes live in a village.

"Over the last year, I have worked on my fitness and technique with my coach John Rees with the support of Sport Worcester, CG5 and Mr (John) Pitt, headmaster at RGS.

"I have represented Wales at regional level and GB under 17s in Copenhagen and Bratislava.

"The games are my first selection for Wales at under 18s level. I was inspired by the 2012 Canadian pentathlon fencers when they visited Malvern Hills and now my goal is to work hard and get sponsorship so I have the chance to get to the 2024 Olympics.”

Worcester Hockey Club player Preston said: “I’m so excited to be involved in such a big competition and be surrounded in a competitive yet professional environment.”

Hartlebury's Worrallo plays for Stourport Hockey Club.

Bobrowska, who trains at Worcester Judo Club, said: “I’m very proud to be representing England for the second year running at the school games.”
