JOSH Marshall retained his iron grip on The Worcestershire’s junior championship trophy in Malvern Wells.

He handled the conditions best on a blustery day which, together with slick greens, made scoring difficult.

The 17-year-old reigning champion’s gross 80 was four better than runner-up Harry Chadwick with Lucy Walton one stroke behind in third.

In the handicap competition, promising 12-year-old Harry Brimmell (25 handicap), who is also a member at Gaudet Luce and Ombersley, returned 72 nett.

Marshall (5) was runner-up with 75 and Chadwick (5) third on 79.

Walton triumphed once again in the 36-hole county girls’ championship at The Vale.

Lifting the trophy for the third consecutive year and the fourth time overall, her gross 71 in the morning round set a new ladies’ course record.

A windy afternoon made scoring more difficult but she still returned 80 to head the field by a substantial margin.

In the Daily Telegraph qualifier, her -3 against a competition scratch score of 74 gave her a chance of making the grand finals in Portugal later in the year.

New The Worcestershire member Nick Day won Division One of the August medal and shared the glory with Rob Schooling in the midweek better-ball.

Day (9) recorded nett 69 in the medal to head Paul Wakely (11) and Colin Lane (11) by one stroke.

Cuth McDowell (17) took Division Two with 72 ahead of Phil Bayliss (17) and Paul Butler (17) on 73. Division Three’s Jerry Hibbert (23) carded the best score of the day, coming in with 65 ahead of Martin Field (18) on 70 and David Bray (23) on 71.

Day and Schooling were victorious in the annual better-ball stableford played in memory of popular former member Stan McCabe.

Their 45 points were one better than Tom Howells and Neil Smith in second and Paul Meakin and John Davies.

Simon Philips and Andrew Longley were fourth with 43.

In the ladies’ Carrington Cup, improving Christine Goody lifted the silverware on count-back from Diane Meakin and Ruth Scott.

All three returned nett 72 and were closely followed by Kate Foster, Walton, Jackie Marks, Pat Rose and Jenny Nions on 73.

There were just two entries for the August weekend medal with Scott shooting one-under-par to win from Helen Thomas.

Kate Cross returned to the winners’ circle in the nine-hole stableford with 13 points. Pauline Taylor finished second with 12 and Esme Davy third with 11.

The Worcestershire’s men’s ‘A’ team lost 4-2 at Droitwich despite wins for Steve Lane (+1) and Richard Sebok (6) 6&5 and Howells (2) and Day (9) 4&3.

The squad drew 3-3 at home to Worcester Golf and Country Club as Dave Tucker (9) and Brian Kendall (12) won 8&7, Dave Marshall (1) and Carter (10) two-up and Jason Allies (2) and Dunster (6) 3&2.

The Worcestershire seniors lost 4-3 at Cotswolds, while a mixed team drew 4-4 with Naunton Downs.
