SIX-HANDICAPPER Andy Dunster mastered a testing course to fight off a 92-strong field to win The Worcestershire’s July medal.

His nett score of 70 was equalled by fellow Division One player Stan Jones (handicap 10), who lost out only on the back six, with Josh Marshall (6) third on 71.

Mike Hill (19) also scored 71 to head Division Three from Andrew Colston (25) on 72 and Stephen Homes (19) on 74.

Once again, mid-range handicappers found scoring tougher with Brian Kentallen’s 73 the best in Division Two.

The 14-handicapper was one ahead of Gary Eames (13) and Mark Williams (16) on 74. The Left-Handers’ Cup, played concurrently with the medal, was lifted by promising junior Allaster Renton.

Playing off a handicap of 17, the 15-year-old recorded a nett 76.

Meanwhile, The Worcestershire’s ladies played two medals.

The weekend competition was won by newcomer Debbie Minett with a nett 75 ahead of June Jones and Helen Thomas on 76.

A total of 22 took part in the Tuesday medal.

Division One players took the top three places overall with Jackie Marks securing the win with 73.

Cathy Harris and Alison Tuck returned 76 to finish second and third, respectively.

Division Two was headed by Jill Exell with 82 and Division Three by Jane Quick with 81.

In the nine-hole competition, Norma Pottinger won with 17 Stableford points ahead of Joy Williams on 14 and Betty Mitchell on 13.

In inter-club matches, The Worcestershire seniors took on two visiting teams in Kidderminster and Broadway at the Malvern Wells course.

Playing with Dave Anderson, captain Nigel Teale eagled the opening hole but their opponents fought back for a half. Home players Dave Wood and Keith Hitchcock also halved, while wins were recorded by Barry Caswell and Peter Kirton 3&2, and Brian Piner and Andy Peet 5&4.

Kidderminster were overall winners, however, 4-3.

But The Worcestershire won their match against Broadway.

Wins were recorded by seniors’ captain Les Facer and Colin Lowe 7&5, Dave Jones and Anderson 5&4 and Hitchcock and Kirton 5&3.

John Williams and Terry Cox halved to secure a 3½-2½ win for The Worcestershire.

Four pairs of ladies drew 2-2 in a better-ball match against Worcester Golf and Country Club.

The winning combinations for The Worcestershire were team captain Vanessa Chesterton with Brenda Lowe 7&5 and Ruth Scott with Chris Goody two-up.

A mixed team travelled to Kings Norton and won 5-4. Winners for The Worcestershire were Trevor and Brenda Cox, Clive and Debbie Minett, Paul and Di Meakin, Colin and Jenny Jones and Pat Rose and Ron Gordon.

Mark Read reported his captain’s day managed to raise more than £500 for charities focusing on multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s.
