FORMER Ryder Cup player Paul Broadhurst was guest of honour at retiring The Worcestershire captain Steve Bradshaw’s dinner.

Warwickshire-based Broadhurst, who won the Scottish Seniors Open last year, regaled the audience with memorable anecdotes from his time on the European tour.

Bradshaw recalled his captaincy year, including the club’s teams winning the Droitwich Shield county inter-club tournament and A team league.

Mark Read will be club captain for the forthcoming year and is looking forward to welcoming men’s and ladies’ teams from Chester Valley, Malvern and Pennsylvania, USA.

The biennial competition for the Ryder Cup-style Malvern Bowl has run for more than 20 years.

The Midland seniors event will also be hosted by the Malvern Wells course.

The Worcestershire seniors won 6-2 at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire in the first of their summer series of inter-club matches.

Wins were recorded by Barry Caswell and John Duncan 5&3, Les Facer and Allan Davies 5&3, Jim Wilde and Dave Jones one-up, Stan Jones and Terry Cox 3&2, Dave Wood and Tony Cox two-up and Roger Blackwell and Dave Anderson 3&1.

New member Maurice Moore and Mike Morris lost 4&2 and Nigel Teale and Keith Hitchcock fell 3&2. Cox won nearest the pin.

A mixed team stableford saw organisers Nigel and Corinne Mills rewarded for their efforts when, together with Andy and April Greene, they won with 122 stableford points.

Ralph and Elsie Kelsall and Paul and Diane Meakin were second on 113, while Ian and Tina Jukes and Jim and Di Wilde finished third on 107.

Alan Smith, Joyce Duncan and Charles and Isabel Carmichael were fourth with 103.

Meanwhile, The Worcestershire professional Paul Barker displayed the club’s brand new GC2 HMT Golf Simulator to the visiting Broadhurst.
