MALVERN Stalwarts landed victory in the annual Smiths Angling Club team challenge fished by ten teams on the River Avon at Birlingham.

On a fine day, but with river conditions low and clear, fish were reluctant to feed and most anglers struggled to weigh in just a few ounces of small fish.

However, Malvern team member Dennis Flanagan managed to catch the best fish of the day — a six-pound barbell, expertly landed on very light tackle to enable him to win his section securing 18 points.

This, together with good section placings from the other five team members, gave the team an impressive 81 points total to win the challenge shield by a big margin.

Team captain Dave Harris took 1lb9oz —14 points, Lee Harman 2lb3oz —15pts, Clive Harman 2lb8oz —15 pts, Billy Hartland 1lb7oz —13 pts, Nigel Bayliss 10oz —six pts.

The match also raised money to help with the costs of a fellow competitor, Dave Whittaker, who is about to leave for Nepal to help rebuild a school that was devastated by the recent earthquake.

Results: 1 Malvern Stalwarts 81 points, 2 Eckington 70 points, 3 Beakingstone Red 61 points.
