MANOR Park players enjoyed success as the Malvern club again hosted the Pegler Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Closed Championships.

During a competitive week across all age groups, Park’s triumphs began with Sam Clements, who won the first event in the eight-and-under boys’ singles only five weeks after claiming the Malvern Open in the same event.

Clements, alongside Sam Laidler, also reached the nine-and-under singles quarter-finals.

Another of Park’s young stars also had a good tournament as Lois Burgess was runner-up in the 10-and-under girls’ singles, joining Laidler and Clements in part of a promising future for the Albert Road North club.

Sally Lewin was another stand-out performer, winning both the 12-and-under girls’ singles and doubles competitions.

No one entered more than Paddy Hyde, who took part in six.

In the doubles, Hyde did well in the men’s event before becoming runner-up in the under 18s and being crowned under 16s champion.

Hyde is now taking his career to the next level, moving to Bath Tennis Academy to train full-time.

Georgina Jeynes-Cupper also had a week filled with success, finishing third in the under 18s and open women’s singles but also second in the under 16s singles, under 18s doubles and under 18s mixed doubles.

The oldest of Park’s juniors, Ellie Fleming and Tobie Timmermans, won the mixed doubles for the third year running, this year in the under 18s event 12-10 in the final match tie-break.

Both players also did well in their other events with Timmermans completing the triple in doubles titles, winning the under 18s and men’s events with ex-Park member Jack Smith.

The triumphs added to Timmermans’ mixed doubles victory in his final year of the junior county closed competition.
