A MALVERN youngster has been crowned county supremo in his age group.

Oscar Forde, a year three pupil at Northleigh Primary School, St Peter’s Road, won the under eights section of the Worcestershire Megafinal chess tournament.

He topped his age group at the University of Worcester as the only undefeated player.

The Megafinal attracted around 100 entrants, who had qualified via local tournaments earlier in 2015, from more than 20 schools in the county.

Alex Holowczak, English Chess Federation director of home chess, presented the prizes.

The tournament was controlled by Matthew Carr, international arbiter, and organised by Worcestershire Chess Association.

Forde now moves onto the Northern Gigafinal at Wright Robinson College, Manchester, on Saturday, July 11, when he will compete in the under 10s section.

Each Gigafinal winner secures a trophy and £100 and goes onto the Terafinal at Loughborough Grammar School in August with a top prize of £2,000 on offer.

The Worcestershire Megafinal was part of the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge, which this year has attracted more than 46,000 children.
