UPTON-upon-Severn has the oldest point-to-point course in the country but it is doubtful if one family has ever dominated a day as the Mahons did this year.

Twenty-one-year-old Leo Mahon rode three winners, while his sister Lara added to the tally with another success on The Magherally Man.

Tom Weston, returning after suffering two collapsed lungs in a Cheltenham Festival fall, saw three fancied rides all finish second.

Leo Mahon’s first success was provided by Awesome George in the members’ race.

The 10-year-old made an impressive return at Howick but, in testing conditions, was kept at the back of the field until joined by Soixante Six in the home straight.

Awesome George asserted between the final two fences and a narrow advantage was extended to six lengths.

Gabe Mahon’s Stratford stable can do little wrong and their last three runners have all been winners.

Leo Mahon’s second success was provided by Two Smoking Barrels in the Jockey Club mares maiden.

The lead changed several times until a close field entered the home straight to face the final two fences.

The Weston-trained newcomer Bignose Kate and Two Smoking Barrells went clear by the 17th before the latter’s experience told as she forged clear on the run-in.

The winner was home bred by Richard Evans and trained by his son Sam near Stratford.

Five-year-old Jack in a Box impressed at Hereford and followed up with a two-miles, five-furlong maiden win.

Western Movie made the early running but petered out with four fences to jump and Ocean Lad led over the final open ditch.

But Leo Mahon had his rival’s measure and established a lead as the son of Kayf Tara stayed on well to win by 12 lengths.

The mixed open for the Charles Coventry Cup resulted in a fourth success of the season for the Tim Eades-trained and Lara Mahon-ridden The Magherally Man.

The decision to run the 11-year-old in novice riders’ races this year has proved inspired and the combination never looked in danger.

As a proven stayer and with conditions in his favour, The Magherally Man dominated proceedings throughout.

Storridge-based Eades said: “He’s won twice in seven days and is a bit more tired. We’ll put him out in the field and see how he recovers. We won’t get another like him.”

Thoonavolla was odds-on favourite for the intermediate but found little in the closing stages as Gate Please took the lead at the end of the back straight before winning by 20 lengths.

Sir Ollar provided Weston with the second of his placed efforts in the restricted race.
