THE Worcestershire’s ‘A’ team produced another fine performance in the semi-finals of the Droitwich Shield inter-club knockout.

Playing away from home against local rivals Worcester Golf and Country Club, they recorded an impressive 2-1 victory to secure a place in the final of the prestigious competition.

In a keenly-contested match, ‘A’ team captain Peter Lupino and partner Dave Marshall won their encounter one-up, as did Steven Lane and Philip Shurmer, while Jamie Dunster and Alan Watts lost.

In club competitions at the Malvern Wells course, a winning score of 47 stableford points was recorded by Neil Bogart (12 handicap) and Patrick McIlroy (15) in the men’s winter better-ball fourth round.

They finished ahead of Mike Hanna (12) and Bill Thomas (12) on 44.

As both pairings had already qualified for the knockout stages, those coming in third and fourth took the remaining places.

The successful duos were Mike Ciric (11) with Andy Longley (5), and Lee Whittall (6) with Dunster (1), who both recorded 43.

In the first of two ladies’ three-ball alliances, Davina Taylor, Pauline Belsham and Elsie Kelsall took the honours with 49 stableford points.

Jill Exell, Joan Herbert and a hidden player took second place with 48 on count-back from June Jones, Mary Horrobin and Pauline Taylor in third.

Several players continued their success in the second three-ball alliance, this time playing with just three clubs and a putter.

Horrobin, Belsham and Kelsall came home as winners with 38 points ahead of Davina Taylor, Liz Evans and Jane Quick on 37.

Organisers Trevor and Brenda Cox reported that 16 groups endured damp and muddy playing conditions for a recent mixed better-ball stableford.

Nevertheless, scoring was respectable and the results were close.

The winners on 41 stableford points were Jones and Peter Hill, closely followed by Isobel Carmichael and Charles Carmichael with 40, and Alison Tuck and Barry Tuck on 39.

Mike Cawley achieved a two on two holes – the fifth and 15th – while April Wilding also got a two on the fifth.
