ALEXANDER Cupper won the West Midlands Foil Championships for under 12s in Redditch.

The 10-year-old fencer from Malvern Wells saw off his rivals at Trinity High School and will represent the region at May’s British Championships.

Cupper maintained his unbeaten record in West Midlands competitions after fighting as an under 12 for the first time.

In a cold sports hall, the poules started and, in an uncharacteristic move, Cupper gifted the first point but focused and dispatched his opponent 5-1.

The poules continued in a similar vein with only one scare as a Kenilworth fighter forced a tie-break, which Cupper won.

But he was only ranked second after conceding the early hit and tackled the eliminator rounds.

Cupper received a bye through to the last 16 and did not drop a point while collecting all 10 in the first two-minute period.

Against a tricky Redditch club-mate in the quarter-finals, he progressed without conceding a point again.

The last four paired him with a tough Hereford fighter but Cupper worked hard and won in the third period.

He faced his Kenilworth rival in the final and established a two-point lead in the first period.

Cupper opened the gap to six before securing victory in the final period to take the championship.
