COLWALL and Malvern Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team secured their first win of 2015 with a 3-1 home victory over East Glos.

The fifth-placed hosts defeated the side one position above them in West Clubs Women’s League Severn Division One.

After a disappointing 3-2 defeat to rivals Hereford seconds the previous weekend, determined Colwall and Malvern fielded a strong side.

They started brightly with Becky Lewis making driving runs down the right.

But the experienced visitors took the lead with a well-timed shot into the corner.

Sammie Shail went on a trademark run, beating four defenders before slotting the ball under the keeper.

East Glos pressed forward, creating many attacks but the Colwall and Malvern defence kept them at bay.

Having broken down an attack, they released Shail to score her second after fine link-up play with Katie Smith.

Shail then completed her hat-trick, coolly firing home when under pressure from the defence.

In an excellent display from the whole team, youngsters Erica Abbey, Anna Bradley and Hennie Baldock did not look out of place among the senior players.

Colwall and Malvern are at home tomorrow against Cheltenham thirds at Malvern St James School (2pm).

The seconds’ Division Three game was called off due to a frozen pitch.

They are away tomorrow at Painswick before a rearranged game with Newent thirds on Sunday at Malvern College (11am).
