PAM Emery-Reynolds began her year as ladies’ captain at The Worcestershire on a fine autumn morning with a well-attended drive-in.

This was followed by a 12-hole three-ball alliance competition at the Malvern Wells club.

Eighteen teams of three entered with Cathy Harris, Jill Exell and Pauline Taylor returning the winning score of 55 stableford points.

June Jones, Jenny Nions and Penny Stevenson took second place on 51, while Ruth Scott, Brenda Jones and Jan Kirkland secured third on count-back.

This year’s ladies’ captain’s charity is the Worcester Breast Unit Campaign.

Retiring ladies’ captain Faith Tubb kick-started the fundraising by inviting members to lay stakes guessing how close to the pin she could putt from some distance on the testing 18th green.

An excellent putt to within 33 centimetres matched the winning guess of Pat Longley.

Stakes were also laid as to the length of the new captain’s three drives.

Tubb, Sally Dare and Pauline Taylor were the nearest.

The total stake money, together with the sale of some merchandise, raised more than £200 for the charity.

Meanwhile, Mark Read continued his good form this year to secure Division One of the men’s November medal.

Playing off a handicap of four, Read carded nett 68, one stroke ahead of Dave Marshall (handicap 1) on 69.

Andy Davies (10) took third place ahead of Josh Marshall (9) and Richard Sebok (7) with all on nett 70.

Club stalwart Denis Chetwood (13) took Division Two with 72, ahead of Gary Eames (13-73), Steve Wynde (15-75), Roger Bradley (15-76) and Tony Rogers (16-76).

A fine 68 by long-standing member Les Facer (19) secured Division Three by some distance from Wayne Stinton (21-74), Euan McClelland (22-74), Steven Hill (18-75) and Simon Hart (2-77).

The prestigious Erskine Cup, awarded to the player who returns the lowest gross score of the three seasonal meetings or the Sunday Cup, produced a tie between Steven Lane and this year’s club champion Jason Allies.

The two then met in a scratch medal round over 18 holes to determine the winner.

County player Lane displayed the consistently high quality of his game to secure the silverware.
