MALVERN Triathlon Club members impressed at the Xterra England Championships in Surrey.

Leslie Dalley and Amanda Dawson recorded times of two hours 55 minutes four seconds and 3.37.10 respectively over the championship distance, in Cranleigh.

Dalley was tenth in the men’s 45 to 49 year category and 91st overall in a field that included around 40 professional competitors, while Dawson finished fifth in the same age group for women.

Dawson has qualified for both the European and World Cross Triathlon Championships next year and Dalley is set to join her.

There was a bronze for Dawson at the Euros earlier this year. Xterra and Cross Triathlon are the mountain bike and off-road equivalent of Olympic and standard distance events done on the road.

They usually involve a 1,500-metre open water swim, 30km mountain bike course and 10km cross-country run.

Xterra is an independent world series for professionals and age group competitors alike with the former travelling the globe to score points.

The off-road bike route at Cranleigh was technical with various tricky sections.

The tough cross-country run involved crossing deep ditches and challenging terrain.
