THE Worcestershire’s Jan Kirkland was well supported at her lady captain’s day with Anne Garner taking the honours.

Garner won the prestigious Lady Captain’s Salver with 37 points followed closely by Davina Taylor (36), Janet Long (36), Jane Poynder (35) and Lisa Diggins (34).

Nearest the pin were Pat Rose on the third, Jen Bishop (8th) and Tina Jukes (5th).

The straightest drive was won by Cynthia Guest, the longest drive by Cathy Harris and the Golden Oldie award by Betty Mitchell.

Marie Willis took the ninehole stableford honours from Sally Agnew, while a charity chipping contest and raffle raised cash for Acorns Children’s Hospice.

The Worcestershire ladies comfortably retained the Redgrove Challenge Cup at Sapey with teams of 12 playing a medal round off handicap and the lowest eight nett scores counting.

Cath Francis carded nett 71 and Liz Evans 73 before Jill Piner and Pauline Belsham followed up with fine performances as the team won by nine strokes.

A scratch league team of Di Meakin, Sally Dare, Chris Urry, Sue Boardman and Alison Tuck put up a sterling performance at Breadsall Priory, Derbyshire, to secure a creditable half.

Meanwhile, the men’s De Vere Open saw players travel to compete in the better ball stableford.

Minchinhampton’s Aaron Banks (handicap 8) and Alex Allard (15) won with 44 points from The Worcestershire vice-captain Roger Brierly (10) and Geoff Fox (5) with 42 and Clitheroe’s N Clowes and K Hunt (41).

Home members Alan Watts (6) and Carl Bayliss (4) took the best gross prize on the back nine from Worcester Golf and Country Club’s D McPherson and D Warner.

The Worcestershire men beat Sapey at home 4½-1½ but their ‘A’ team lost 4½-1½ at Droitwich despite a win for Dave Tucker (9) and Dave Marshall (1) one up.

Tom Howells (4) and Andy McCabe (5) halved but there were losses for Steve Carter (12) and Kevin Carter (6) 3&2, Phil Birch (6) and Andy Dunster (6) 3&1, Phil Park (9) and Paul Yorke (3) 5&4 and Phil Dance (3) and Richard Sebok (11) 3&2.

In a mixed match at Lilleybrook, a team led by Brian and Jill Piner sealed a 5-3 win. The successful pairings were Andrew and Pauline Stowe, Gordon and June Jones, Gordon and Joan Herbert, Paul and Di Meakin, Derek and Penny Stevenson and Ian and Pam Emery- Reynolds.

The seniors’ tankard stableford was won by Alan Garden with 41 points from Derek Phillips (39).
