Chairman stays positive

MALVERN Rugby Club chairman Peter Woods remains positive after a heavy National League Three South West defeat.

Last weekend’s 64-26 thrashing at mid-table Chippenham was their seventh league defeat in a row.

The games do not get easier for third-from-bottom Malvern as they host second-placed London Irish Wild Geese at Spring Lane tomorrow (2.15pm).

But they will take heart from a gutsy 21-19 defeat at Irish on September 8.

Malvern shipped 10 tries in their first visit to Chippenham against a heavier pack although the hosts’ backs created most problems.

Woods admitted: “On a day when Malvern were beaten soundly by a bigger, faster side, it would have been easy for the players to give up but they tried their best.”

Malvern were 64-5 down but tries from Luke Milton, James Southall, Ieuan Mustow and Nick Miller securing a losing bonus point.

They head to Kidderminster Carolians in the North Midlands Colts Cup first round to be played by January 20.

Malvern team v Irish: Kitching; Southall, Mustow, Fleming, Miller; Dixon, Longley; Cosgrove, Prosser, Murphy, Smith, Williams, Gratwol, Marshall, Thomas. Replacements: Brookes, Tisdale, Hale.
