NEWTOWN SPORTS JUNIORS GIRLS U14S 4, PHOENIX FC GIRLS U14S 1
NEWTOWN Sports Juniors U14s Girls maintained their fantastic start to the season with their best win, despite a below par performance.
Despite leading 3-0 at half-time through goals from McBain (two) and Davies, Newtown had not played with any great fluency and struggled with Phoenix's pacey attack on the few occasions that they ventured into the Newtown half. However, Norris-Storey-Day, continuing in goal, had few serious attempts to deal with.
Newtown opened the scoring through a well-taken goal by McBain, who doubled the lead with an exquisite flick over the keeper, mid-way through the half. Davies appeared to have put the game beyond Phoenix when she calmly slotted the ball past the keeper from six yards.
Newtown were far more coherent in the second half and played some good football throughout the team. The defence played with far more assurance, Hill and player-of-the-match Smith in particular, but were undone by a speculative through ball, which Norris-Storey-Day was unlucky not to reach before the Phoenix striker finished with a deft chip.
Newtown continued to play the better football in the second half, with the midfield dominating more as the game went on, and were finally rewarded with their fourth goal late on in the game. A well worked short corner and an excellent cross from Georgina Davies, gave Emma Davies the time and space to finish off what was probably the move of the match.
Newtown finished the game playing much more like the team that has remained unbeaten in their previous seven matches and deservedly climbed to second in the table, following this result.
