WELLAND'S success story has continued after being crowned runaway champions of Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two.

The village club, who were formed in 2011, earned their sixth promotion in seven seasons.

Welland's strongest squad yet are 19 points ahead in the title race ahead of Saturday's campaign finale at Broadwell Amateurs Reserves.

They have won all 15 home games in the league while only conceding 11 goals.

Welland will take their place in Division One after being led by James Lush's 21 goals and 18 assists.

Dave Lawrence made the most appearances for the club this season with 34.

Club captain Jon Williams said: "When we first started pre-season training last July, I knew we had a strong squad that could compete in a higher league.

"But to win by nearly 20 points is a brilliant achievement for us as a club and has come as a bit of a shock.

"We only went top for the first time about four months ago and just never lost again after that.

"We have a great squad who are all really committed to training and games and we have a great laugh

on and off the pitch which is equally as important to me at this level of football.

"I'm confident we can compete again next season in another higher league.

"I don't feel like we have been given the recognition and respect we have deserved in recent years but now people are starting to see what a strong squad we have at Welland. Four promotions in four seasons doesn't happen by chance."

Welland, managed by Dave Oakley and coached by Tony Smith, are backed by the Robin Hood pub, Fortis Living and MSJ Sports Centre.

The club would welcome sponsors for next season.
