HEREFORD FC progressed into the FA Vase third round with a 4-1 victory over Haughmond at Edgar Street.

Rob Purdie, John Mills, Pablo Haysham and Mike Symons scored the goals against the West Midlands League Premier Division high-fliers from Shrewsbury.

Another impressive attendance of 2,170 watched the Midland League Premier Division leaders continue on the Vase trail.

Manager Peter Beadle said: “The main thing out of it was the result.

“But the performance was probably not quite what we were looking for and we were not quite at it for whatever reason.

“The early goal settled us down and I thought that would be the start of us shifting the ball quite quickly.

“Maybe we should credit Haughmond because they came and really did a job on us.

“They worked extremely hard, credit to their club for that and they really gave us a game.

“They didn’t give in at any point and I think finally in the end a little bit more quality was the difference on the day.

“It certainly wasn’t work-rate, which has been one of our strong points recently, but maybe that little bit of quality.”

Beadle is not bothered about Hereford being billed as Vase favourites.

He added: “How we were favourites before the season started I don’t know because no one had seen us play yet.

“There’s no added pressure. The pressure is for me to try to make sure we keep the lads’ feet on the ground and that we repeat performance after performance at the standard they set.”

Alvechurch also progressed in the Vase with a 2-1 win at Bridgnorth thanks to goals from Josh March and Karl Edwards.
