A DRAMATIC penalty shoot-out sent Welland into the Worcestershire FA Saturday Minor Cup second round.

They beat last season’s finalists Badsey United 4-3 on spot-kicks after drawing 2-2 at Spitalfield.

Welland, who had lost heavily to Badsey in the 2013-14 semi-final, started brightly with good possession football.

Holding midfielder Tom Soley and defenders John Gullick, Simon Haywood, Olly Lewis and Jon Williams kept things tight at the back.

Early chances fell to Mark Taylor, who drove a shot narrowly over, while Jamie Harding and Omar Elmougy both went close.

But Badsey went ahead on 30 minutes when a rare defensive error allowed the ball to break to the striker, who shot home from close range.

Welland almost hit back before the interval when Craig Tommey shot across the face of goal and Paul Edwards’ overhead kick hit the side-netting.

The second-half began in much the same manner except Welland’s possession resulted in far more chances.

However, against the run of play, Badsey’s lead was doubled when Taylor’s misplaced pass fell to a Badsey winger, who struck a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner.

Welland needed a quick goal and good midfield play saw Elmougy break and finish into the bottom corner.

Badsey were tiring and, with five minutes left, Harding equalised when he poked home from close range.

The game went straight to penalties and Welland’s Haywood had his well saved before the Badsey skipper fired over.

But, with Lewis, Williams, Elmougy and Harding all scoring from the spot, Welland’s keeper Chris Newman saved the final penalty when he dived to his left to ensure progress.
