IT has been more than 60 years since Hereford United played in the FA Cup first qualifying round.

Not since the 1950-51 season have the Bulls entered the competition at such an early stage due to their league status.

Yet, tomorrow, following their relegation to the Southern League, Hereford, a club famous for their 1972 giant-killing win over Newcastle, visit lowly Ellistown and Ibstock United (3pm).

Playing three levels lower than United in the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division, the match has been switched to Ellistown’s neighbours Coalville, whose ground can house more fans.

While the game is a long way from Hereford’s first round proper match against Burton last season, it represents a chance to bank a much-needed £3,000 in prize money.

Manager Jon Taylor said: “Everyone knows what the FA Cup means to Hereford with Ronnie Radford and the goal that he scored. Hopefully, it’s onwards and upwards now - all the lads seem confident and upbeat.

“We had Ellistown and Ibstock watched last Saturday and so we know a little bit about them.

“Coalville’s pitch is a slightly bigger one than they played on last Saturday. They just play a normal 4-4-2 and so if we keep the ball and don’t give it away in silly areas then hopefully we should win.

“If we can get a run in the FA Cup that will bring a little bit of money into the club as well.”

Hereford are looking to build on Tuesday’s 2-1 win at Paulton Rovers, while Ellistown and Ibstock have already played two FA Cup games, beating Studley 2-0 and Kirby Muxloe 1-0.

They are currently ninth in their league with 11 points from six games.
