1:40pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in Football
LEIGH and Bransford Badgers’ third annual fair play invitation tournament drew a record number of competitors.
Kempsey Colts, Oldbury Park Tigers, Newtown Sports, Welland Juniors and St John’s Colts played exhibition matches from under eights to 10s at Ralph’s Field Stadium.
Coaches and parents were asked to nominate their fair play opponent and Worcester’s Oldbury Park were presented the winning cup by tournament organiser Rich Davies. Around 160 youngsters were involved.
- Malvern Town Wanderers Swifts opened their account with a hardearned 1-1 draw at Shipston Excelsior in Ambassador Evesham League Under 14s Pool ‘B’.
Debutants Will Smith, Patrick Oakley and Owen Adams all performed well.
Swifts were saved by the post and several good stops from keeper Marcus McGee before Patrick Oakley put them ahead, curling home after a fine run on 20 minutes. The second period was even but Swifts conceded the equaliser 10 minutes from time.
- Welland Juniors Lions began the Pool ‘A’ campaign with a 4-3 home success over Bidford Pioneers.
Despite early pressure, Bidford went ahead against the run of play on 25 minutes only for Sam Naulls to level with a penalty for handball.
Welland went 3-1 in front after the break through Sam Whitton’s close-range finish and another Naulls spot-kick.
Injured defender Charlie Tippell was substituted and Pioneers bagged a quick brace to level.
Keeper George Weaving made good saves before Naulls sealed his hat-trick at the other end to win the game with a fine free-kick.
