THE Mercian Festival Junior League are looking to recruit more players for their thriving girls’ programme.

They have seen the number of girls taking part in the sport increase significantly over the past 10 years but are actively seeking to add to that tally.

At present, there are 38 teams across five age bands who play matches on Saturday mornings.

Under 10s play six-a-side and 11s seven-a-side, while 13s, 14s and 16s compete at nine-a-side.

Sixteen clubs offer girls’ football and a table showing which age groups are catered for at each is available at mercianjuniorfootballleague.

co.uk Meanwhile, Welland Juniors Girls lost 1-0 to midtable rivals Warndon Villages Wildcats in the Mercian Festival Junior League Under 13s Division.

Despite absences due to injuries, they fought hard to overcome a first-half deficit as Lucy Walton starred in defence with captain Sian Cousins and keeper Abby Senior shone.

In the boys’ section, Welland Juniors Colts went down 5-1 at home to Under Nines Division Two titlechasers Feckenham Village in a pulsating match.

Tom Fearn scored a welldeserved goal and Tom Smith crashed a header against the bar.

Leigh and Bransford Badgers Orient won 3-2 at Droitwich Town Warriors after coming back from two down with 22-goal Tobey Jones (2) and Joshua Hothersall on target.
