JOSH Dickenson bagged five wickets on debut as Barnards Green claimed a much-needed win over Wellington in Birmingham League Division One.

The 14-year-old leg spinner took 5-25 while George Rhodes starred with bat and ball as the Malvern side won by 113 runs at North End Lane.

Green got off to a disastrous start as Andy Ford was trapped lbw and Josh Haynes fell first ball caught by a diving Dan Lloyd. This became 13-3 when Ryan Tongue (12) became Jack Twigger’s third victim.

Wendell Wagner made the next breakthrough when Stewart Hepburn (25) was well caught.

Phil Harris and Rhodes were both dropped and Wellington’s heads dropped even further when the duo brought up a 100 partnership.

Green got beyond the 200 mark before Rhodes fell just one run short of a well-deserved century when he was caught by Tom Masters.

His wicket also brought to an end a 153-run partnership. With the score on 220, Harris was bowled by Dan Lloyd for 74. Will Dovey and Oli Swift put on a further 20 before Swift (8) gave Masters his third catch and Twigger his fourth wicket.

Brewer (2) was then run out by Dan Vaughan before Dovey (20) holed out to Wagner to complete Twigger’s five-wicket haul. Green reached 251-9 off their 55 overs.

The home side were depleted due to injuries and unavailability. But Rhodes stepped up to the plate as he took a wicket in his first over when Charlie Mackleworth mistimed a hook and was caught by Harris.

He soon grabbed his second wicket as Dan Lloyd (13) was caught behind by keeper Ash Brewer.

Wellington were struggling on 33-3 when Dan Vaughan (4) was dismissed lbw by Harris. Jack Shantry only scored 13 before he was caught by Andy Ford off Rhodes.

Wagner (40) struck a six, but two balls later Dickenson had revenge as he played on.

This was the start of a superb spell from Dickenson as Martin Delaney was clean bowled, Matt Simmonds was stumped and Masters was caught and bowled.

Rhodes took his fourth wicket, dismissing Twigger, but it was Dickenson who finished the game and grabbed his five-for when he bowled Sam Lloyd (52).

Green visit Shifnal on Saturday (noon).
