BARNARDS Green suffered late agony as rock-bottom Walmley snatched a two-wicket win in the final over of a dramatic Birmingham League Division One encounter.

Phil Harris top scored with 93 while Ryan Tongue and George Rhodes hit half centuries as Green reached 315-8 off 50 overs.

But Walmley hit back thanks to fine batting from Iandev Chauhan (114) and Aaron Thomason (90) before a boundary from Jordan Hoffman secured victory with one ball to spare.

There was drama even before the match as last week’s five-wicket hero Jack Mackintosh picked up an unfortunate injury in the warm-up and had to go to hospital.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Ryan Tongue and Andy Ford started confidently before the latter was bowled by Aatif Ali for 21.

Tongue’s run-a-ball 65 came to an end when he inexplicably attempted a third run and was run out by David Ison.

Jonathan Newis then dismissed Dannie Rees (3) and Rhodes (51) to leave Green on 155-4.

Ollie Swift (31) was caught by Hoffman off Mike Waugh while Harris took Green past 250 with a six.

He also brought up the 50 partnership with Kev Golder with another maximum. But in an eventual 48th over where he smashed three sixes and a four, his innings came to an end when he was bowled by Ison.

Golder (4) was caught by Waugh off Ali and Tim Williams (5) was run out by Aaron Thomasson.

Set a target of 316 to win, Chauhan did not take long to get into his stride, scoring 20 off Williams’ first over.

The first wicket came with the score on 34 as a mix-up saw Carlos Prowse run out by Swift.

Chauhan retired hurt not out on 28 bringing Thomasson to the wicket.

James Brocklebank chalked up 59 before being caught by a diving Rhodes at backward point. But this brought Chauhan back into bat and his partnership with Thomasson got increasingly worrying for Green.

Walmley needed just 33 off the last six overs, but Green did not give up. Rhodes appeared to have made the key breakthrough when he clean bowled Chauhan for 114.

In the next over, Thomasson (90) was run out following a phenomenal throw from the long on boundary by Harris.

Rhodes struck again when Robert Hutchings was smartly stumped by Ash Brewer for two as the balance tipped slightly in Green’s favour.

Andrew Hendry (7) then holed out to Golder off Williams to leave Walmley needing 18 off two overs. Harris started well with four singles and a leg bye, but Newis hit a six off the last ball to leave the match on a knife edge.

In the final over, Williams removed Newis (8) and Mike Waugh (11). Ison took a single and the fourth ball was a wide leaving four required off two balls.

But Hoffman struck the next ball through square leg and just past Tongue on the boundary to win the game.

On Monday, Green got back to winning ways with victory over Stourport on Severn in the Canterbury Cup.

Charlie Foley made 78 off just 41 balls as Green posted 181-8. Stourport then fell well short on 134-9 with Harrison Smith finishing with figures of 3-13.

Green host Himley on Saturday (noon).
