THERE were contrasting fortunes for cricket clubs fighting relegation from their respective leagues.

One factor they did have in common was a frustrating wash-out of fixtures on Bank Holiday Monday, which denied teams the chance to battle for valuable points.

Malvern drifted deeper into Worcestershire League Division Two danger on Saturday with defeat to leaders Burghill and Tillington.

The second-from-bottom Regency Road side are now 43 points off safety with just three games left, starting at home to mid-table Coombs Wood tomorrow (1pm).

Malvern’s bowlers did their best against Burghill in a three-wicket home defeat.

The batsmen only set 163-8 from 50 overs helped by 36 extras before Neil Thompson (3-24) shone with the ball but the visitors won with seven overs to spare.

Bromyard hauled themselves out of the Division One drop-zone with a crushing 240-run defeat of fellow strugglers Harvington.

They are seven points clear and can catch Redditch, who they visit tomorrow (1pm).

Harvington were skittled for 39 in reply to 279-3 with Ahmed Jamal taking 5-21 and Josh Tongue 3-11.

Tongue also scored 127 and Ash Bullock 83 in a third-wicket partnership of 192.

Worcester Nomads remain third and Colwall fourth.

Ryan Tongue scored 74 in Nomads’ 262-8 but second-placed Pershore won by six wickets with a rain-hit 249-4.

Tom Coleman hit 83 in Colwall’s 255 and they triumphed by 110 runs as Hagley were restricted to 145-8.

Nomads visit leaders Worcester and Colwall head to Pedmore tomorrow.

Meanwhile, seventh-placed Barnards Green host promotion-chasing Wellington in Birmingham League Division One tomorrow (noon).

Green still need points to ensure safety after Saturday’s five-run defeat at Wolverhampton.

The hosts smashed 273-3 and then Green fell short of a rain-reduced target on 239-8 with Alex Hepburn scoring 67 and George Rhodes 66.
