Jenkins ready for busy year ahead

TERRY Jenkins says he is raring to go after recharging his batteries ahead of a busy year at the oche.

The Ledbury ace has been getting in plenty of practice at home ahead of a hectic schedule which kicks off with a first-round clash with Vincent van der Voort in the totesport.com Players Championship on January 28.

After his involvement in that tournament ends, Jenkins will turn his attention to the 2010 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts, which gets under way at London’s O2 on February 11.

Jenkins, nicknamed ‘The Bull’, will meet former Evesham-based star Ronnie Baxter on the opening night.

This will be followed by 13 weekly rounds of action across the UK until the play-offs, held at Wembley Arena, on May 23 as the sport’s eight best players battle it out for the £125,000 winners’ cheque.

Jenkins reached the third round of the Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship before losing 4-2 to eventual runner-up Simon Whitlock last month.

The sixth seed overcame his first-round jinx at London’s Alexandra Palace before bowing out to the unseeded Australian.

But, after a busy 2009, Jenkins has spent the last couple of weeks relaxing at his Herefordshire home while stepping up his practising for an equally non-stop 12 months ahead.

The 46-year-old, who is now ranked fourth in the world, said: “I got a bit fed up, I was not putting the practice in. I’ve had a few weeks off and that’s what I needed.

“I was doing a lot of exhibitions last year and travelling abroad to places like Germany quite regularly which meant I could not get any practice in.”

Speaking on his first-round clash with van der Voort at the totesport.com Players Championship, Jenkins added: “It will be a tough match.

“You never know which Vincent will turn up but if it’s on form then I’m playing better than him at the moment. I’ve got to make sure my game is right.

“The Premier League Darts is more about coping with the crowd than worrying about your opponent. I hope that I can stay in the top six this year.”
