Last wicket KO for Colwall’s cup hopes

COLWALL I v SHIPLEY HALL.

COLWALL'S National Village Knockout Trophy run came to an end on Sunday when Derbyshire team Shipley Hall put together a last wicket stand of 30 to win the game.

Colwall won the toss and chose to bat. Mike King looked in commanding form against the seamer, but in a sign of what was to come, the slow left-armer from the Pear Tree End had King and Panniers struggling to time the ball.

Panniers was first to fall, caught behind but Tim Riley joined King to take the score to 30 from 10 overs.

Ready to accelerate and in a reasonable position, the home team were rocked when captain King was astoundingly caught and bowled and then Gareth Bakewell was taken by the same player's second remarkable catch.

Riley and Butler consolidated for a while, seeing off the first of the visiting spinners.

With three further spinners bowling, only Butler ever showed real momentum. Riley went for 16, caught behind.

As soon as Butler had passed his half-century, Griffiths lofted the ball high to mid-wicket to be caught and Butler failed to clear the man on the ropes at deep mid-wicket, attempting a six. It was left to last pair Damien Berry and Nick Hitchings to edge the score closer to respectability While 124 was not what Colwall had expected, it was never going to be an easy score for the visitors to make.

Shipley Hall's wickets fell at intervals, a key run-out led to Griffiths picking up three wickets, including a catch for Davey at mid-on. When the ninth wicket fell with the score on 97 it seemed certain to be Colwall's day.

Despite several near misses, it was Shipley's final pair who carried their team through to the next round.
