LEDBURY slumped into the relegation zone in Marches League Division Two after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of rivals Canon Frome.

The visitors proved too strong for Ledbury who were skittled for 75 after being set a daunting target of 299 for victory.

Ben Child was key to Canon Frome’s win as he scored 138 including 19 fours and two sixes before Christopher Boyson (5-31) tore through Ledbury’s batting line-up.

Ledbury won the toss and put their opponents in to bat – but it was a decision that backfired as Canon Frome piled on the runs.

An opening stand of 182 between Child and Sam Pratley put the away side firmly in control before the former was run out by Josh Evans for 79.

With Child pushing the score on it was hard work for Ledbury but they kept plugged away and eventually got their reward.

Brandon Caffull trapped Pete Richards lbw before claiming the prized wicket of Child.

Emily Arlott also chipped in with two wickets. But with Canon Frome closing on 289-7 Ledbury had it all to do and matters got worse shortly after coming out to bat.

Owen Collingbourne, Caffull and Jason Belchers were dismissed for ducks as Ledbury found themselves on 35-6.

Paddy Merryman notched 26 but when he was removed the writing was on the wall. Emily Arlott added 21 before Canon Frome clinched a 224-win in the 22nd over.

The defeat saw Ledbury drop into the bottom two and now face a tough trip to leaders Glangrwyney tomorrow (1pm).

Ledbury second XI claimed a winning draw at Moccas in Division Three.

Robert Yeoman top scored with 39 as Ledbury notched 122-9 with Alan Harris recording figures of 17-5 for the hosts.

Ledbury then had Moccas rocking as Vickie Evans took 11-2, Maurice Embrey 2-2 and Simon Ritchie 3-24.

One wicket was needed to secure victory, but Matty James (9) and Bill Bowen (10) refused to be removed as Moccas finished on 91-9.

Sixth-placed Ledbury host Bartestree and Lugwardine third XI tomorrow (1pm).
