MEGAN Langford came home six strokes ahead of the pack as she won The Worcestershire’s Junior Open.

The 15-handicapper, of Gaudet Luce, returned a nett score of 69 to come out on top ahead of Minchinhampton’s Sebastian Pender who took second place on count-back from The Worcestershire’s Harry Brimmell, both on nett 75.

Meanwhile, The Worcestershire’s men’s teams enjoyed varying fortunes. Club captain John Williams led his side to a 4:2 victory over visitors Newport.

The winning pairs were Geoff Fox and Gary Eames 4&2, David Flanagan and Andy Dunster 3&2 and Barry Caswell and Will Jones 2&1. Williams and Mark Read halved on the 18th and Clive Minett and Nick Day also returned a very creditable half.

The seniors recorded their best win of the season as they ran out 6:0 winners against Kington.

Seniors’ captain Nigel Teale and Tim Keats won 2&1, Terry Cox and Andrew Colston 3&2, Les Facer and Keith Hitchcock one up, Patrick Davis and Stan Jones 4&3, Len Coleman and Garry Eames 5&4, and Andy Peet and Tony Pawson 4&3.

In contrast, the club’s A team suffered a 6:0 whitewash at Kidderminster despite being involved in some high quality matches.

The B team fared better at home against Droitwich as they won 5:1.

The successful pairs were Peter Basten and Mike Day 4&3, Jim Wilde and Gerry Rooney 2&1, Pete Jolley and Will Jones 2&1, Colin Jones and Chris Hardy 3&2, and Keith Hitchcock and Mark Read 4&3. Elsewhere, ladies’ captain Elsie Kelsall led a party of golfers to South Staffordshire for her Lady Captain’s Away Day.

Although the day was blessed with lazy sunshine, tricky greens and plenty of bunkers tested the players as scoring in the three-ball alliance proved difficult.

The winning group were Sandra Schofield, Jenny Nions and Julia Radley with 69 points followed by Chris Urry, Jenny Jones and Isabel Carmichael on 68 and Pat Rose, Liz Pool and Jane Quick on 66.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Jen Bishop, silver division, and Brenda Jones, bronze division. Diane Meakin won the silver division’s longest drive and Liz Pool for the bronze division.
