SCRATCH golfer Peter Lupino recorded his best round of the season to lift the prestigious Sunday Cup at The Worcestershire Golf Club in Malvern Wells.

The 12-time club champion went out in 34 and back in 32, carding seven birdies and nine pars to secure a total of 66 and reduce his playing handicap to +1.

Reigning champion and two-handicapper Jason Allies followed closely on nett 68, with Nigel Allam (handicap 11) a further stroke behind on 69.

In Division Two, Graham Chatterton (handicap 14) took the honours with nett 70, ahead of Rob Schooling (15) on 71 and Richard Bird (15) on 72.

A good round by Clive Taylor (18) saw him lead Division Three with nett 69. He was followed in by J D Charles (19) on 71 and John Goodwin (18) on 74.

The Worcestershire’s Ladies also competed for the Grannies’ Cup. Three-time winner Pat Rose put up a stout defence but couldn’t match the 41 stableford points returned by Chris Urry.

The winning score reduced Urry’s handicap to 11 and consolidated her early season form when she had carded gross 79 to win the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Lady Veterans’ Championship at Droitwich.

Lucy Walton and Cathy Harris finished second and third in Division One, each with 34 points, one ahead of Rose.

Joan Haworth put in a fine round to finish second overall and first in Division Two, with 38 points.

Joan Herbert followed her home on 33 with Liz Bird third on 32.

The nine-hole competition was won by Ann Moody with 16 points from Davina Taylor 15 and Ann Goode 14 The men’s mid-week medal saw a clear win for Division One’s John Wootten, who carded nett 67, to reduce his playing handicap from eight to six. Will Jones took second place on 70, with Graham Chatterton third on 72. John Goodwin headed Division Two on nett 76, with Andrew Peet easing second place from Vic Hammond, both on 78.

The nine-hole stableford was won by David Thomas with 20 points, ahead of his son Bill on 16 points and Terry Fuller on 14.

Phil Bayliss won The Worcestershire Seniors’ captain’s away day at Fulford Heath Golf Club on count back from Terry Cox and Mike Travis.

Golfers from as far afield as Aberdeenshire and Neath competed in The Worcestershire’s Seniors’ Open Pairs at Malvern Wells.

The event played host to a field of 76 pairs, representing a total of 30 golf clubs.

The outright winners were home player Mike Sterry, who dropped only five shots in the round, and his partner Gethin Jenkins from Ross on Wye.

Their 48 points were two ahead of M. Griffiths and G. Heath from Droitwich, with B Whittington and R Parker from Robin Hood third on 45.

Roger Brierly and Clive Minett came fourth on countback from fellow members David Wood and Peter Kirton, both pairs on 44. Whetstone Golf Club’s Paul Williamson registered a hole-in-one.

Course manager Steve Lloyd received praise from players for his presentation of the course and event organiser David Fawbert paid tribute to all who had assisted in the success of the day.
