JOHN Williams and Elsie Kelsall celebrated their captain’s days at the Worcestershire Golf Club.

From a field of more than 150, Paul Yorke carded an eagle, four birdies and 10 pars on his way to winning The Captain’s Putter with a score of 42 stableford points.

The four-handicapper came home three strokes ahead of Gary Godwin (handicap 10) in Division One, with Richard Day (11) third, also on 39.

It was tight in Division Two with Allan Davies (13) easing out John Davies (13), both on 38, with John Whitehead (15) third on 37. The second best score of the day was returned by Division Three’s Andrew Whiteley (18) with 40 points, ahead of Alan Smith (22) on 39 points and Colin Lowe (18) third on 36.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Mike Holt on the third and John Davies in two on the 18th. Tom Howells recorded the longest drive on the 16th while Nick Smith beat 140 others to take the putting prize.

The captain also held a weekday three-ball alliance for restricted members and ladies. This was won, on the back nine, by Chris Urry, Jackie Marks and Pat Rose from Mike Travis, Derek Phillips and Peter Taylor, both teams on 75 points.

Alison Tuck, Jenny Bishop and Pauline Belsham were third on 74. Liz Pool was nearest the pin on the third and Jackie Marks nearest in two on the 18th.

Captain Kelsall chose a Wimbledon theme and an inclusive format for her special day. The ladies played a three-ball alliance with two scores to count at each hole.

The clear winners were Joan Herbert, Laura Speers, and Brenda Lowe with 84 stableford points. In a close contest for second place, Brenda Cox, Corinne Mills and Tina Jukes eased out Mary Horrobin, Ann Wilson and Liz Gordon on the back nine.

Both teams scored 79 points, but the nine-hole competition winners Kate Cross, Marie Willis and Esme Davy stole the show by recording 44 points to post the best front-nine score of the day.

Betty Hakes came nearest the line on the sixth, Mary Horrobin nearest the pin on the eighth and Pat Rose was the most skilful in a fiendishly difficult crazy putting course set by Assistant Professional, Ryan Corbett. The ladies wore Wimbledon coloured apparel and clubhouse was decorated in purple, green and white for the afternoon meal.

Jenny Musson won The Lady Captain’s Salver with 39 stableford points.

The Worcestershire defeated visitors Lilleybrook by five games to three. Doreen Hunt and Mike Dobel won by an impressive 5&4 while 12-year old Grace Bowen and Mark Read roared to a two over par round to close out the match on the 15th, winning 5&3.

Mixed match organisers Debbie and Clive Minett also had a fine round, beating their opponents 6&4. Other winners for the home side were Alex and Andy Dunster 4&3 and Liz Pool and Will Brimmell 3&1.

Meanwhile, the Past Captains’ Lowe Cup was won by John Monk with 41 stableford points, from Read on 36 and Mel Stocker on 35 points.

The men’s mid-week stableford saw a win for Sam Macleod with 41 points, ahead of Pat McIlroy on 39 and Andrew Bird on 36.
