A SERIES of drop-in sessions will be held in Bromyard in an attempt to “reignite” short mat bowls in the town after a 10-year absence.

The Herefordshire Short Mat Bowling Association (HSMBA), in conjunction with Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire and Halo Leisure, will be running the open sessions at Bromyard Leisure Centre from 10.30am until 12pm on Wednesday, June 7. Short mat bowls is an adaptation of the outdoor game played on a 45ft long mat in an community hall-type environment.

HSMBA chairman Jamie Harris said: “Bromyard had a thriving short mat bowls club for around 15 years before a membership decline led to its demise in the 2006.

“Fortunately, the equipment was retained by the leisure centre, where the club was based, and everything is in place to try and re-ignite interest from local people.”

Bromyard Leisure Centre had hosted the association’s largest annual short mat event since the early 1990s.
