ROYAL Grammar School notched up a first win while Barnards Green lost their unbeaten record in Worcestershire Cricket Board Indoor League Worcester Division One.

Barnards Green (105 all out) lost to the Worcester Nomads B team (106-3) with 2.2 overs still remaining.

The Malvern side began in a hurry with Josh Tongue (28) and Andy Ford (19) taking 38 from the first three overs.

With Josh Tongue retiring in the third over off only 10 balls Ryan Tongue (27) accompanied Ford until he was bowled by Josh Hawes.

From 52-1 after five overs Green’s run-rate declined.

In the search for late runs they lost four wickets for three runs in four balls as Nomads’ Nick Jones took 2-21.

Nomads needed to avoid risks but by the fifth over were on 48-3 after Derek Austin made 18.

Pat O’Driscoll (30 not out) and Andy Leach (20no) steadied the ship with an assured unbroken partnership to cruise home. Nomads A (114-4) lost to RGS (115-4) on the final ball.

The Bransford side started slowly and lost unnecessary wickets though Ollie Ranscombe (27no) was in good touch to retire off just 10 balls.

Guy Davies was run out inexplicably and Harvey Groves followed, leaving Nomads on 50-2 from six overs.

Rich Henry (28) and Sean Butler (26no) added 64 in the last six overs but presented only an average target.

When the school’s opener Callum Turner (25) retired at the halfway point the scoreboard showed only 51-1.

Two quick dismissals followed before George Cook (23no) was partnered by Alex Wheeler whose retirement lasted just three balls after Turner’s swift run-out.

With three overs left and 36 needed they set about the task with determination and confidence.

Needing three from the last ball Cook found the cover wall to post their first win in three matches. In Division Two Nomads C (114 all out) beat Malvern (92 all out) by 22 runs.

Nomads lost their first five wickets in 3.3 overs, leaving captain Malcolm Jones to pick up the pieces.

He took the score to 84 from 10 and added 30 from the final two overs before being run out off the penultimate ball for a season’s top score of 74.

Kieran Smith (2-11) took two wickets in his first over.  Malvern’s reply was more measured but Tom Fairclough fell cheaply caught and bowled.

Anthony Arnold (24) and the composed Ollie Hallion stayed together until the ninth over when the latter retired.

Arnold was run out and Lewis Hill went for a duck, leaving Malvern needing 27 from the final over to win.

Hallion was the last man out on 33.

WCB Seniors (113-3) lost to Hallow (117-2) with 10 balls left.

The seniors made the most of generous bowling with 36 wides.

Peter Gurr and Martin Woodward reached retirement but were the only batsmen to make double figures.

The seniors’ bowling was gentle as Hallow’s David Pugh, Jez Hodson and Stuart Hayes all reached retirement and Connor Murphy (18) was run out.

They stayed ahead of the run-rate from the third over on and won with Hodson returning to finish unbeaten on 36.
