A STRONG field of 44 tackled Bransford’s annual seniors’ captain against past captain competition.

To win an Easter egg, the players had to land within a club’s length of those placed around the course with some craftily located in bunkers.

The competition, played in a similar format to the Ryder Cup including singles, greensomes and better-ball matches, also incorporated the new captain’s drive-in for Rob Blake.

He provided three drives for the field to attempt to finish near to, putting his second tee shot into the lake straight in front of him.

However, his team still finished up winning the event 24-16 on points.

In the singles, Blake was two points down on John Phillips, Bob McGrath seven up on Harry Godwin, Anne Hamilton and Ian Hamilton were level, Jeff Thomas four down to Charlie Payne and Brian Taylor and Dave Lumsden were level.

The greensomes saw Andrew Jarvis and Adrian Wood two down against Pauline Wetton and John Knowles, Cynthia Holmes and Dick Bettsworth level against Heather Bucket and Peter Harrison, Mike Kenway and Charles Hawkridge 11 up against Dave Harvey and Neil McCallum and Glen Mallinson and Andy Falconer two down against Mike Holmes and John Hadley.

In better-ball, Robin Young and Ted Buckett were three up against Mike Kemp and Mike Weaver, Roy Williams and Bill Bowen two down against Lee Dyment and Ken Jones, Roger Clark and Neil Sheldon four down against George Batty and Brian Corfield and Rob Wetton and Martin Saunders two up against Alan Wallcroft and Paul Edlin.

Nearest the pin were John Knowles and Martin Saunders on the fifth and 15th holes respectively, with Pauline Wetton hitting the closest drive for the ladies.

Bransford seniors made it back-to-back wins on the road when they won their second friendly of the summer season at Burghill Valley 5-3.

Rob Blake (14) and Harry Godwin (17) lost 4&2, Alan Wallcroft (22) and Ted Buckett (19) won 5&4, Lee Dyment (20) and Neil Sheldon (21) won 2&1, John Phillips (22) and Roger Clark (21) lost 2&1, Roy Williams (20) and Peter Harrison (23) won 3&2, Dick Bettsworth (26) and Dave Miller (18) lost 4&2, Gerry Rebbeck (16) and Mike Weaver (19) won 5&3 and Ian Hamilton (13) and Paul Edlin (23) won one-up.

The ladies lost their home match against Burghill 2½-1½ in their season opener.

Andy Lammas was in fine form to win Bransford’s main April medal.

The six-handicapper shot a gross round of 75 for a nett 69 to win Division One by four shots from Simon Gent (85 gross 12 handicap 73 nett) with Gordon Jack (82-9=73) in third place.

Division Two was won by Jack Cullity (91-21=70) with M Smart (98-27=71) second and Ronald Gibbs (86-13=73) third.
